Being fast is only half of it.
All anyone ever talks about in racing is how fast someone can go around a track. But there’s an entirely different skill that every good driver needs to have to be successful: Consistency.
Sure, you might lay down one fast lap in qualifying and start in the front row. But when it comes to hours-long stints with dozens of laps and on-track variables, driver consistency becomes the most important factor. If a driver can’t lay down respectable times lap after lap during the course of an actual race, that qualifying position means nothing.
SafeIsFast, an site for driver education videos and articles, interviewed handful of IndyCar, Le Mans, and Daytona champions to have them explain exactly why consistency is so important. Drivers like Tony Kanaan, Ryan Hunter-Reay,Tommy Milner, Boris Said, and Brendon Hartley make appearances, all with helpful information for any aspiring driver.
Take a look for yourself below, and maybe take a couple of notes for the next time you hit the track.
